The Lakewood Estates Civic Association (LECA) hosted its second annual 31st Street South Sidewalk Cleanup event April 19, helping in the revitalization of the much-neglected west-side sidewalk on 31st Street from 54th Avenue up to 22nd Avenue S. More than 43 volunteers collected over 234 pounds of trash.

This year, the cleanup had expanded support by partnering with Keep Pinellas Beautiful, The Global Love Project, the St Petersburg Bike Club, the City of St Petersburg, and PSTA. Keep Pinellas Beautiful provided volunteers with, grabbers, buckets, safety vests and gloves. The Global Love Project participated in beautifying and drawing community attention to the cleanup, and the much-neglected I-275 underpass, with sidewalk art.

The St. Petersburg Bike Club’s members stopped by during their Saturday ride and helped clean up the sidewalk and I-275 underpass.

The cleanup event bolstered efforts to foster community engagement, pride and ownership during a key time of city planning. Residents and community stakeholders recognize the pivotal nature of revitalizing 31 Street S. by making it safer and more functional for bikers, pedestrians and traffic flow.

The Lakewood Estates Civic Association is bounded by Lake Maggiore on the north, 54th Avenue on the south, Martin Luther King Street (aka 9th Street) on the east and 31st Street on the west. The association’s mission revolves around property and community in Lakewood Estates.

The Civic Association focuses primarily on zoning, both within and on its borders, and beautification, while the Neighborhood Watch addresses crime, code violations and the safety of our residents.
