Places This Week: BayCare buys Tyrone Barnes & Noble property
A weekly roundup of notable local real estate news.
BayCare Health Systems, Inc. (“BayCare”) closed Jan. 29 on the purchase of property occupied by national bookseller Barnes & Noble, at 2501 Tyrone Boulevard N, St. Petersburg, for $10 million. The purchase was made under the registered name BayCare Properties LLC.
Barnes & Noble, which serves over 600 communities in all 50 states, has held court at the Tyrone Blvd. location since 1993 when the structure was built by seller JWH Properties Inc.
St. Petersburg developer and attorney James W. Holton, president and owner of JWH Properties, Inc., was selected by Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2021 for a seat on the Tampa Bay Area Regional Transit Authority’s governing board and in 2023 to serve on the Southwest Florida Water Management District’s Governing Board.
The one-story, 15,846 gross square-foot structure is situated on a 2.04-acre parcel of land across the street from the Tyrone Square shopping mall. In March 2021, Colliers Commercial Services created a listing advertising the property as available to lease.
BayCare purchased a shuttered Barnes & Noble location last September at 11802 N. Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa’s Carrollwood area after the bookseller lost its lease. The 32,000 square-foot facility sold for $10.5 million. BayCare plans to transform the Tampa property into an expanded primary care location, set to open in 2026.
In August 2024, BayCare received unanimous approval from the Hillsborough County Industrial Development Authority for a $1.9 billion financing plan to fund completed and ongoing projects throughout Tampa Bay.
School architect selling Treasure Island home
Local architect Rick Rados is selling his two-story waterfront residence at 6 Treasure Lane, Treasure Island for $1.825 million. Rados earned his architectural degree from the University of Florida and is known for designing schools throughout Pinellas, Hillsborough and Pasco counties, including Countryside High School in Clearwater, Sickles High School in Tampa and River Ridge High School in New Port Richey.
In 2003 Rados received the Medal of Honor from the Tampa Bay area chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
Situated on a 0.31-acre parcel of land, the three-bedroom, two-bath elevated home, with 1,440 square feet of living space, was built by Rados in 2022. The lower level provides an additional 1,296 square feet of garage and utility space. The structure was designed to withstand a category 4 hurricane and did not incur any flooding or damage from last year’s storms.
Highlights include an open floorplan, individual AC units in each bedroom, energy-efficient doors and shutters, parking for six, and 75 feet of waterfrontage on Boca Ciega Bay.

Ashley Furniture founder purchases Snell Isle home
Ronald G. Wanek, founder and chairman of Ashley Furniture Industries, closed on the purchase of property located at 1777 Brightwaters Boulevard NE, in the Snell Isle neighborhood of St. Petersburg Jan. 23 for $5.45 million.
Wanek and his wife, Joyce, also purchased the property next door in 2013 and two other Snell Isle addresses in 2008. Wanek’s Forbes profile lists his net worth at $6.8 billion. His son, Todd, has been CEO of Ashley Furniture since 2002.
The two-story waterfront home, with 3,123 square feet of living space, was built in 1950. It is situated on 0.43 acres of land.
The listing was off-market.
Kenneth City apartment complex sells
The sale of Ashford Bayside, a 189-unit apartment complex with addresses at 5870 56th Avenue N. and 5651 58th Way N in Kenneth City, closed Jan. 23 for $24.835 million. The sale had been listed as unpriced.
A mix of studio, one- and two-bedroom units, ranging in size from 500 to 850 square feet, are spread across five residential buildings, each with three floors. Built in 1972 and 1974, the property provides more than 200,000 gross square feet situated on two parcels totaling 7.16 acres of land. 83% of the units are two-bedroom residences and 15% were completely rebuilt in 2023. An elevator provides access to the second and third floors.
Property amenities include a leasing center, swimming pool, playground, dog park and on-site laundry facilities.
The seller, a foreign limited liability company under the registered name Ashford Bayside LLC, purchased the two parcels in 2019 for $17.6 million. Joe Thavis and Zach Nolan with Jones Lang LaSalle provided the listing.
Seminole two-acre estate lists
A 7,198 gross square-foot home situated on a 1.98-acre plot of land at 8755 Commodore Dr., Seminole, has listed for sale for $3.25 million.
The three-story property, with three bedrooms and three full baths, was built in 1997. The 21-foot-high main entrance off of the circular driveway leads to a foyer with hardwood and travertine marble flooring. Largo auto shop and restaurant for sale
The Shop, an auto repair service located at 10714 Walsingham Rd., Largo, has listed for sale with an asking price of $875,000. The purchase includes the auto shop and a restaurant, which has a tenant in place.
The 4,887 heated square-foot structure was built in 1958 and situated on a 0.57 parcel of land. Included are seven bays, two of which are on the exterior. Inside is a lobby and air-conditioned office. Auto shop and office equipment may be included in the sale.
The property is located off of Seminole Blvd. and is zoned C-2 for general commercial services. The lease for the restaurant has two years remaining.
The seller, Rhys Properties, Inc. out of Palm Harbor, purchased the property in 2019 for $525,000. The listing is provided by Rene Trasorras and Miriam Kelly with Coldwell Banker Realty.
