A weekly roundup of notable local real estate news.

A historic property designed by Don CeSar hotel architect Henry H. DuPont in 1910 has hit the market for $2.995 million. The home, first located at 450 4th Avenue N., St. Petersburg, was built for Ralph Veillard, an early St. Pete merchant, politician and civic advocate.

Born in France in 1864, Veillard moved to Marion County, Florida in 1886 after immigrating to Canada, and then to St. Petersburg in 1900. In 1902, he acquired an expansive fertilizer firm and in 1908 operated what was considered the largest general store in the city. That year, he also began a three-year term on the St. Petersburg Board of Trade and served as director of the St. Petersburg Building and Loan Association.

He was also elected to the city council and pushed for a waterfront beautification campaign for Tampa Bay. He stayed active in local politics and served intermittently on the city council until his death in 1931. His widow remained in the home until the 1950s.

Originally built as a three-bedroom, two-bath house, the 3,949 heated square-foot two-story structure is one of the city’s earliest surviving masonry buildings in the bungaloid style. The open-front porch, first story and hexagonal tower are constructed from blocks custom made by Farmer and Company and tinted with a soft venetian red oxide pigment.

In 1979, when a nonprofit church-affiliated organization purchased the property with the intention of demolishing the structure and building a 15-story senior living facility, the house was saved and moved to its current location at 262 4th Avenue N. In 1982, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The inside of the home has since been turned into office space with an industrial kitchen, a glass-enclosed basement works area and a conference room. Recent updates include new plumbing and electrical systems, exterior grout repointing and updated landscaping and irrigation. Significant restoration is required to return the property into a single-family residence.

The seller, represented by Liz Heinkel with Smith & Associates Real Estate, purchased the property in 2015 for $476,300.
