Jonathan C. Gibbs High School (Gibbs) is one of the oldest public schools in Pinellas County and boasts a rich heritage. Gibbs is named after Jonathan C. Gibbs, an African American who served as Florida’s first African American Secretary of State in 1868, and the first African American to serve as State Superintendent of Public Instruction in 1873. Prior to opening in 1927, there was no high school in St. Petersburg for African Americans. Gibbs became desegregated in 1971. In 1979 the artistically talented program, currently called the Pinellas County Center for the Arts (PCCA), began providing a comprehensive educational program of artistic, academic and creative development and preparation. In 1998, The Pinellas Academy for the Technical Arts (PATA), began providing instruction that blends business and technological skills and knowledge into academic courses. Now called Business, Economics, Technology Academy (BETA), the magnet program is a response to a strong need for skilled, high-tech workers.
