Roberto Clemente Award

The Rays will celebrate Roberto Clemente and launch Hispanic Heritage Month at Tropicana Field on Friday, Sept. 16, when the team plays the Texas Rangers. Roberto Clemente Day was established by Major League Baseball to honor the legacy of the Hall of Famer and 15-time All-Star who died in a plane crash on New Year’s Eve 1972 while attempting to deliver humanitarian relief to the earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

In his honor, Major League Baseball annually presents the Roberto Clemente Award to a player who best represents the game of baseball through sportsmanship, community involvement and positive contributions, both on and off the field. The Rays’ nominee for this prestigious award is announced each year on this date, and in partnership with Feeding Tampa Bay, the Rays will host a food drive. Fans who donate a non-perishable item will receive tickets to a 2023 Rays game. Ticket information can be found at Raysbaseball.com/Clemente.

The Rays’ 40-man roster includes players from several Latin countries:

Wander Franco
Francisco Mejía
