Tampa International Airport refines Airside D concept
Tampa International Airport (TPA) has unveiled an updated concept for its future Airside D facility, slated to open in 2028. The 16-gate facility, designed for both domestic and international flights, aims to enhance passenger experience and accommodate the region’s projected growth. TPA currently serves approximately 25 million passengers annually, with expectations to increase to 35 million by 2037.
The preliminary rendering, developed this summer by construction firm Hensel Phelps, was presented to the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority Board of Directors in August. This new design represents a significant optimization of the original building concept awarded in 2023.
“The design phase is an iterative process fueled by thorough research and analysis, and careful assessment of facility and operational needs in close collaboration with airline, Federal, and other partners,” stated Smitha Radhakrishnan, TPA Executive Vice President of Planning & Development and Maintenance in a prepared statement. “We want this facility to be the premium traveler experience that TPA guests expect while prioritizing fiscal responsibility every step of the way.”
Key features of the new Airside D concept include:
- An orthogonal shape for improved space and operational efficiency.
- Two levels plus a mezzanine housing two airline lounges with airfield and bay views.
- An International Passenger Arrival processing area on the first floor.
- A shuttle system and guideway.
- Centralized shopping and dining locations offering 360-degree gate views.
- Large open spaces with intuitive wayfinding and natural light.
The updated concept maintains TPA’s reputation for convenience and customer service while reflecting the Tampa Bay region’s aesthetic. The building, covering approximately 600,015 square feet, is estimated to cost around $1.5 billion. This estimate considers the increased scope, size and complexity of the facility, along with global inflation, supply chain challenges, and labor cost increases. The project will be funded through a combination of airport reserves, bonds, and grants.
TPA has also launched a new webpage, www.AscendTPA.com, providing detailed information about Airside D and business opportunities. Final designs are expected to be completed in 2025, with groundbreaking and initial construction stages set to begin later this year.
