Tex-Mex restaurant Wicked Cantina to open Thursday
Wicked Cantina, St. Petersburg’s newest Tex-Mex restaurant, will officially open for business this Thursday, Feb. 29.
Located at 3650 Tyrone Blvd. North, the 6,000-square foot building was previously occupied by a Sonny’s BBQ restaurant. Mike and Janice Dolan, who own Wicked Cantinas in Sarasota and Anna Maria Island, announced the St. Pete location in December.

“We’ve probably looked at 50 locations in St. Pete, St. Pete Beach, and the Clearwater area over the past seven years,” Janice Dolan said. “The Sonny’s location appealed to us because we liked the free-standing building, square footage, full parking lot, and busy neighborhood close to the beaches. Some of our key employees live North of the Skyway, so it was a natural move. ”
Along with major renovations to the interior and façade, the Dolans commissioned Pinellas Park artist Derek Donnelly to paint a large “Western” mural over the entrance, and more decorative works inside.
Wicked Cantina’s menu is described as “Austin-style” fare including tacos, burritos, enchiladas, fajitas and more, as well as seafood, sandwiches and burgers.
“We moved here from Austin in 2014 when our son attended IMG Academy,” said Dolan. “We missed the Tex-Mex food we loved in Austin and purchased the Anna Maria Island restaurant location, which opened in December 2014. Our second location opened in Sarasota in 2017.”
The full-service restaurant has a liquor bar, and the owners say they plan to add live music.
