Live theater is a solid-gold cornerstone of St. Petersburg’s ever-vibrant arts community. We have two professional, Equity theaters – American Stage, which has been challenging audiences and going above and beyond the theatrical status quo for four decades, and the young upstart freeFall Theatre, about to turn 10. In that decade, freeFall and its founder and artistic director Eric Davis have raised the bar significantly in terms of what theater can dream, dare – and accomplish; this despite little to no financial assistance from the State of Florida. In this interview, freeFall’s Director of Community Outreach Matthew McGee talks about freeFall’s past, present and future, as well as its perceived place in the Tampa Bay theatrical universe.
