Black On The Scene and Partners Host Free Movie Screening for Black Girls to Celebrate Disney’s First Black Princess in Live Action

ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA, March 28, 2023 – Black On The Scene, a multi-media production company, is proud to announce a partnership with Cultured Books Literacy Foundation and Courageous Leap to host a free movie screening of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” for 200 Black girls. The #BlackOnTheSea event will take place on Sunday, May 28th, 2023, at AMC Sundial 12 Theater in St. Petersburg, Florida.

This event is a celebration of Disney’s first Black princess in live-action, and attendees will have the opportunity to experience the magic of this momentous occasion. Along with the movie screening, the event will include face painting, a photo booth, and gift bags, as well as an AMC gift card and the chance to choose one of the newly released “The Little Mermaid” books provided by Cultured Books Literacy Foundation to take home as a special souvenir.

The event will also feature a documentary filming that captures the heartwarming and empowering reactions of the young girls as they witness the first Black princess in a live-action adaptation of “The Little Mermaid.” In addition, our partners are committed to impacting the youth in the community by spreading light on themes ranging from Water Safety, Literacy, Marine Biology, and Black Representation in Media. Courageous Leap will offer free swimming lessons and opportunities to help dismantle children’s fear of the water. Cultured Books Literacy Foundation will provide a free copy of the newly released book “The Little Mermaid” and discuss their programs aimed at promoting literacy in youth.

To make this screening possible, Black On The Scene is calling for official sponsors to join in the celebration. Kennedy believes that collaboration between organizations that support Black and Brown youth in the community would increase their collective impact.

“We are thrilled to be hosting this event for Black girls in our community, to celebrate Disney’s first Black princess in live action,” said Kennedy. “We hope that through our partnerships, we can provide valuable experiences, lessons, and inspiration for these young girls to pursue their dreams and embrace their cultural identity.”
