The Uhuru Movement is organizing the “Voices of Resistance” benefit concert to raise resources for the “Hands Off Uhuru! Hands off Africa!” Legal Defense Fund, and Florida musicians of diverse genres have stepped forward to defend the democratic rights of the African community.

Last year, on July 29th, the U.S. government waged the most serious attack on the Black Liberation Movement since the 1960s when the FBI raided seven homes and offices of Uhuru Movement leaders including the home of Uhuru Movement founder/leader Chairman Omali Yeshitela, as well as the Uhuru House community center in St. Petersburg, Florida. The government is now threatening indictments, expected in early 2023, against Yeshitela and other movement leaders.

Says Jamie Simpson, Chair of the Uhuru Solidarity Movement – St. Petersburg, “We hope this benefit concert will start a movement of artists taking a stand against the U.S. government’s attack on the democratic rights of the African community. We will call on people to actively support the African community’s right to advocate and organize for their own liberation and self-determination.”

The show will include music by Sade Sunde, Rutterkin, Witch Hiatus, Shana Smith, Healing Fyah, Whirlynn Garcia of Florida Indigenous Alliance and Pedro El Poeta, and spoken word poetry by Life Malcolm and Charles Hines.

Burning Spear Media Director and former St. Petersburg, Florida City Council Candidate, Akile Anai, will speak during the concert. Director Akile is one of the four Uhuru Movement leaders targeted by the FBI in the July 29th raids.
