FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tampa Bay’s longest-running film series makes permanent move to St. Pete’s Green Light Cinema
ST. PETERSBURG, FL – Second Screen Cult Cinema, Tampa Bay’s longest-running movie series, officially announced that it has permanently moved its monthly screening events to downtown St. Pete’s Green Light Cinema movie theater (221 2nd. Ave. N.). Second Screen will present Peter Jackson’s Heavenly Creatures at Green Light on Thursday, Aug. 22 before shifting its programming to the third Thursday of every month.
“Simply put, Green Light Cinema is the best independent movie theater in the Bay area, and we couldn’t be more excited to call them our home moving forward,” shared Second Screen co-founder/co-host Michael Martz.
Originally launched in February 2015 as a community-focused nonprofit, Second Screen curates, screens and hosts unconventional and unforgettable cult film events geared towards adult moviegoers (18+) looking for a refreshingly unique cinematic experience. Currently celebrating its tenth year, Second Screen has presented nearly 100 films in Tampa and St. Pete, ranging from the shocking and lurid to the arty and underrated. In addition to Heavenly Creatures, Second Screen’s remaining 2024 lineup includes Tim Burton’s Ed Wood (Sept. 19), An American Werewolf in London (Oct. 17), Dark City (Nov. 21) and Being John Malkovich (Dec. 19).
Each Second Screen event kicks off with an intro from local co-founders Martz and Ann-Eliza Musoke-Taylor, as well as fellow board member and Hillsborough County Film Commissioner Tyler Martinolich. After the credits roll, the Second Screen gang engages the audience in a discussion about the film they just watched together in Green Light’s 80-seat theater.
Operating in downtown St. Pete since October 2020, Green Light showcases first-run arthouse films from around the world, including many from prestigious film festivals like Cannes, Sundance, SXSW and more. The theater recently restructured and formed a nonprofit organization—the Friends of Green Light Cinema—to continue surviving and flourishing in today’s challenging theatrical landscape.
Tickets to Second Screen Cult Cinema’s monthly screening events can be purchased at Green Light’s box office or online at greenlightstpete.com.
