FRESH A.I.R: Artist In Residency Welcome Show
St. Petersburg, Fla. – The Morean Center for Clay highlights the art of Lily Denhoff, Dani Lewis, and Kayla Noble in their Fresh A.I.R. exhibition, unveiling on September 13, 5-9pm. Each new artist in residency (A.I.R.) brings a unique new element to the ceramic studio and will spend the upcoming year teaching classes and using the studio space to create new works.
As an artist, Lily Denhoff is deeply process-driven and intuitive, continually seeking to integrate the diverse experiences of the mediums she explores. Each material and technique informs and feeds into the next. Her work creates an ongoing dialogue between mediums, the work itself, and the moment in which it was created.
Dani Lewis explores clay as a place of refuge, through the creation of soft biomorphic vessels. She draws visual inspiration from organic elements such as clouds, various plants and fungi, and human anatomy, creating hand-built forms with dramatic curves and undulations. Each interlocking vessel captures the inherent tension existing between the interior and exterior of these vessels, examining the relationship between escapism, comfort, and emotional avoidance.
Kayla Noble works primarily with wood-firing, explaining it an homage to the unpredictable, the primal, and the beautifully imperfect. Driven by the pursuit of form, she crafts vessels that search for the expressive potential of clay. She pairs methodical caresses with guttural and instinctive decisions to build gravity-defying shapes that speak to containment and openness. Some vessels show off their insides, asking to be filled, while others nearly complete themselves, suggesting a full and expansive interior space.
The exhibition is free and open to the public from Wednesday to Saturday,10am-5pm, on view September 13 – November 1.
