A belated, yet heart-felt Thank You to Bill De Young for your excellent historical perspective on the Beaux Arts Coffeehouse. In the summer of 1963, I was prospecting for performance opportunities as a folk artist and had the extreme good fortune to stumble upon the Beaux Arts. When I explained my mission, Tom explained, “All of our entertainers perform for free. However, Our manager, Mike Southworth, is leaving for. school in September. Have you ever considered an executive position?”
I did, and the experience I gained there was invaluable.
In May of 1965 I found myself once again looking for performance opportunities at the Main Point Coffee Cabaret in Bryn Mawr, PA. The owner, Jeannette Campbell, said, “Well, we book our performance through agents in New York. However, Our manager, John Shade, is leaving for school in September. Have you ever considered an executive position?”
I did, and the next ten years were magical. Working directly with so many popular recording artists was equivalent to a college education in the performing arts, and led me to start my own business. My autobiography, “Little Boy Found” tells a more complete story.
Now, as performer, recording engineer, voice actor, author, editor and publisher, I stand firm on the foundation I formed while managing Tom’s tiny coffeehouse in Pinellas Park.
I hope I remembered to thank him.
