Post Conviction Project Inc. Earns Statewide Certification as Criminal Defense Legal Aid Organization
We’re proud to announce that the Supreme Court of Florida has officially certified Post Conviction Project Inc. as a criminal defense legal aid organization under Chapters 11, 12, and 13 of the Florida Bar Rules.
This makes us just the second organization in the state to receive this designation—and the sole one focused exclusively on criminal appeals and post-conviction relief.
“Our certification represents a breakthrough for individuals whose legal battles don’t end at conviction,” said
CEO and Director of Legal Services, Elisabeth Whitmire, Esquire. “This recognition allows us to meet the urgent need for skilled post-conviction representation in a system where too many are left to navigate alone.”
Why Post-Conviction Legal Aid Matters
Each year, thousands of incarcerated Floridians file post-conviction petitions without legal representation. These filings often involve complex legal standards, strict deadlines, and procedural hurdles that can derail even valid claims. As a result, courts are burdened with incomplete or improperly filed motions; delaying justice and straining judicial resources.
Providing qualified legal assistance helps ensure that legitimate claims are heard on their merits, streamlines the process, and improves outcomes for all involved.
A Two-Pronged Approach: Legal Advocacy and Reentry Support
Post Conviction Project Inc. delivers services through a dual model designed to support individuals both during and after incarceration:
Legal Services: Led by licensed attorneys under CEO and Director of Legal Services, Elisabeth Whitmire, Esquire’s direction, the legal team focuses on criminal appeals, sentence modifications, and other forms of post-conviction relief.
Reentry Services: Overseen by COO and Director of Reentry Services, Brittany Mullins, this program offers support in workforce readiness, life skills, and financial literacy to help returning citizens build stable, independent lives.
“Our reentry work is about equipping individuals with the tools they need to thrive,” said Mullins. “Whether someone has used our legal services or not, they can access support that promotes independence and stability. Ultimately, our goal is to reduce recidivism by investing in people’s long-term success.”
With this new certification, Post Conviction Project Inc. is poised to expand its impact statewide by offering hope, advocacy, and opportunity to justice-impacted individuals and those seeking a second chance.
