SPHA Receives $842K Grant from HUD for Public Housing Upgrades

ST. PETERSBURG, FL (MAY 8, 2024) – The St. Petersburg Housing Authority (SPHA) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a grant for $842,360 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Upon receiving news of the grant, SPHA President/CEO Michael Lundy remarked, “This grant is a testament to the ongoing commitment of our organization to enhancing the quality of life for our residents and investing in the future of our community.”

On May 6th, HUD allocated a total of $3.17 billion in Public Housing Repair funding to 2,756 public housing authorities (PHAs) in all 50 states as well as the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands to make capital investments to their public housing stock. Specifically, PHAs can utilize this funding for the development, financing, modernization, and management improvements of public housing developments.

HUD Acting Secretary Adrianne Todman expressed the importance of the grants, stating, “At HUD, our mission is to create strong, sustainable, inclusive communities and quality homes for all.” Todman emphasized that the grant funding is a necessary investment to ensure that public housing meets the needs of its residents and strengthens neighborhoods for future generations.

The grants are provided through HUD’s Capital Fund Program, which offers annual funding to all public housing authorities to build, renovate, and/or modernize the public housing in their communities. Housing authorities can use the funding to complete large-scale improvements such as replacing roofs or making energy-efficient upgrades to heating systems and installing water conservation measures.
