Ultrasound isn’t just for babies anymore! Gulfcoast Ultrasound Institute, a premier provider of diagnostic ultrasound continuing medical education (CME), has been making “sound” waves in St. Petersburg, Florida since 1985. Ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of internal organs and tissues (including bones, tendons, ligaments, and even nerves). Ultrasound allows for dynamic imaging of patients to aid in quick and painless bedside diagnostics. Additionally, ultrasound should be used to assist in the guidance of needle-based interventions such as IV placement, fluid removal, and the application of regenerative medicine products related to musculoskeletal injury. Unlike X-rays and CT scans, ultrasound does not use ionizing radiation, is considered very safe, and can be used in pretty much any clinical setting.

President and founder Lori Green began her career at Suncoast Medical Center here in St. Petersburg, FL in the 1970s as an X-ray technician. She jumped at the opportunity to receive on-the-job training in diagnostic medical ultrasound. After leaving the clinical setting and working with an ultrasound equipment company, she identified a need for medical education outside of the university system (which did not exist then) for healthcare providers interested in learning how to perform and interpret ultrasound examinations. She developed a business plan and approached her employer with the proposal, but they shot her down. Lori and her husband Gil knew they were onto something, and at night and on the weekends as a side hustle built and marketed her vision.

In 1985, Gulfcoast Ultrasound Institute started offering quarterly courses out of the now Tradewinds Hotel, and then also what is the now Bellwether Beach Resort on St. Pete Beach. Word slowly began to spread and the frequency of meetings increased forcing them to lease a fixed site for the next 29 years in Dolphin Village Center on St. Pete Beach, working with local hotels to accommodate course participants from all over the world.

In July 2017, Gulfcoast Ultrasound Institute relocated to The Plaza Tower in downtown St. Pete overlooking the pier district. Since its inception, Gulfcoast Ultrasound Institute has trained over 170,000 medical professionals from all over the world. With a staff of 13 full-time employees, 75+ expert world-renowned Instructors, and standardized patient models, Gulfcoast Ultrasound has led the industry as a respected powerhouse in diagnostic ultrasound continuing medical education (CME).

In addition, to live courses, Gulfcoast Ultrasound Institute offers education for groups of all sizes, as well as online and private one-on-one training. The Institute has trained medical professionals on numerous professional sports teams, healthcare providers, hospitals, and military groups.
