Florida One-On-One Doubles® Championships presented by Visit St. Pete / Clearwater
to Take Place on May 7
Free Event for Tennis Fans to Enjoy Fast-Paced Serve-and-Volley Tennis Tournament

St. Petersburg, FL (April 19, 2022) – The Florida One-On-One Doubles Championships presented by Visit St. Pete / Clearwater featuring current and past ATP Tour Players is set to take place on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at The St. Petersburg Tennis Center. The one-day tournament offers free general admission and special VIP packages that includes a clinic with former ATP legends.

One-on-One Doubles Tennis is the crosscourt serve-and-volley singles game with the alley included. Players are required to serve-and-volley on both serves or there is a loss of point; Half volleys are allowed. One-on-One Doubles tournaments have been held at numerous venues across the U.S., including the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, which is the home of the US Open Tennis Championships.

“There are so many tennis fans who miss the fast-paced action of serve-and-volley tennis played by former greats like John McEnroe, Pete Sampras and Stefan Edberg,” said Coach Ed Krass. “I developed One-on-One Doubles to showcase this lost art of tennis and I’ve had such positive feedback from many tennis coaches and past and present ATP Tour players. In fact, we have a really good television broadcast on our YouTube channel from a past One-on-One Doubles Tournament with ATP legends Mikael Pernfors, Johan Kriek, Murphy Jensen and Tim Wilkison showing how top pros play this serve-and-volley contest.”

The event is a 16-player draw and starts with round robin contests at Noon, followed by the semifinals and championship match. The semifinal and finals will be recorded live and air at a future date on Bally Sports Florida. Serving as the broadcasters for the event are Jimmy Arias and Luke Jensen, two highly-popular U.S. players from their time on the ATP Tour.

Arias, who was coached by Nick Bollettieri, is a former Top Five ranked singles player with a grand slam championship in mixed doubles at the French Open with partner Andrea Jaeger. Over his singles career, Arias scored victories over Andre Agassi, John McEnroe, Boris Becker, Jim Courier, Mats Wilander, Pat Cash, Goran Ivanisevic, Yannick Noah, Andres Gomez and Aaron Krickstein. He was also a member of the United States Davis Cup teams from 1983-1987.

Jensen, who earned the nickname “Dual Hand Luke” because of his ambidextrous skill, is considered one of the best-ever U.S. doubles players. A top junior player, he teamed with Patrick McEnroe on the junior circuit and then with his brother Murphy on the ATP Tour. Luke has won double-digit doubles titles, including a Grand Slam championship from the French Open.

Arias and Jensen will also join Coach Ed Krass for a pre-event Net Game Clinic that’s part of the VIP Package. Krass is the founder and director of One-on-One Doubles Tennis, which is sanctioned by the USTA and played on college campuses nationwide. Coach Krass led the Harvard Women’s Tennis Team to four consecutive Ivy League team titles and four national Division I team tournament appearances. He also coached the Charlotte Heat of the World Team Tennis League to the playoffs and a number two finish in the Eastern Division in 1991. Additionally, he is the author of six tennis videos and DVDs.

A full day of tennis and entertainment is planned for the event. The RJ Howson band, which recently opened for ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons on his current tour, will be playing during the round-robin segment of the tournament. Food will be available for purchase from The Acropolis Greek Taverna and Taco Bus. Beverages, alcoholic and non-alcoholic, will also be available.
