World Day of Remembrance For Road Traffic Victims

WHO: Road traffic victims and their families and safety advocates, including Bike/Walk Tampa Bay, the Car Free St. Pete initiative of the St. Petersburg Downtown Partnership, Bike Florida, and St. Petersburg Bicycle Club, with support by Forward Pinellas.

WHAT: Victims of road traffic violence & safety advocates will gather on World Day of Remembrance for two events in Pinellas County to remember and honor those impacted by the increasing traffic violence on our roads. Victims will tell their stories and participants will walk and bike short routes in their honor and to draw attention to the issue. Events will be in Treasure Island (walk) & St. Petersburg (walk & bike). Guests include Treasure Island Mayor Tyler Payne and city officials. Also invited are St. Petersburg Mayor Ken Welch, members of the city council and other city officials.

WHEN: Sunday, Nov. 20, 9 a.m. in Treasure Island and 1 p.m. in St. Petersburg

WHERE: On the steps of Treasure Island City Hall, 120 108th Ave, Treasure Island, Fla.
Williams Park, 350 2nd Ave N, St. Petersburg, Fla.

WHY:
· Deaths of pedestrians and bicyclists in Pinellas County doubled in 2021 compared to 2020. There haven’t been that many pedestrian and bicycle-related deaths in more than 15 years.
· Motorcyclists’ deaths are on pace to set a five-year high in 2022.
· The Tampa Bay region is considered the fourth most dangerous for vulnerable road users in the country.
· World Day of Remembrance was created 25 years ago to:
o Remember victims
o Support families as they grieve
o Act to reduce traffic violence by reducing speeding, informing the public of safe practices & laws, holding responsible those who kill due to neglect, distraction, and aggression, & improving reporting of crashes by police and news media
