CBI to celebrate Pride Shabbat June 24, 2022
(St. Petersburg, FL) – Congregation B’nai Israel of St. Petersburg will host its 7th annual Pride Shabbat service, Friday, June 24, at 6:00pm. CBI invites the entire community to attend.
CBI’s Pride Shabbat program is free, open to the public, and celebrates LGBTQ+ Jews, allies, friends, and families.
Featured guest speaker is Rabbi Josh Lesser of Atlanta’s Bet Haverim synagogue, founded by LGBTQ+ Jews. Traditional prayers will be sung to Broadway tunes and all visitors will receive kippot (skullcaps) custom-designed for the occasion.
Immediately following the service, CBI invites participants to enjoy a festive
cocktail reception.
Those who wish will have plenty of time to move to other Pride activities following the reception.
The congregation will have a booth at the Pride Festival on Sunday, June 26, on Central Avenue in downtown St. Petersburg and welcomes all to drop by and learn more about the congregation.
Judaism teaches that everyone is created b’tzelem elohim – in the image of God. CBI Pride Shabbat director Valerie Hyman says, “At B’nai Israel, we welcome people of all sexual orientations and gender identities in the religious, social, and educational life of our congregation.
“Pride Shabbat is an opportunity for the community to come together and share joyous and meaningful prayer in an inclusive environment.”
Congregation B’nai Israel of St. Petersburg, 300 58th St North in St. Petersburg, is a Conservative egalitarian congregation.
