Weekend arts forecast: Ken & Drew & Sherlock too

Ken Block and Drew Copeland, the singing/songwriting front guys for Gainesville-based pop/rock outfit Sister Hazel, play one of their infrequent acoustic duo shows Friday at the Safety Harbor Art & Music Center.

Sister Hazel’s 1997 Top 20 hit “All For You” is still in regular rotation on indie-rock and “adult alternative” stations (alongside “I’ll Be” by the band’s brother from another mother, Edwin McCain). And the band retains a strong, loyal following around the country and across the globe.

Theater

It’s the first weekend for Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Adventure at freeFall Theatre. This is an adaptation by comedy playwright Ken Ludwig, with Eric Davis and Matthew McGee as Holmes and Watson, respectively. Three other actors play 40 roles between them.

Doing similarly good business is Jobsite Theater’s adaptation of Stephen King’s Misery, across the bay in Tampa. Details and tickets here.

Social media is saying all sorts of good things, too about When the Righteous Triumph at Stageworks (Tampa) and Native Gardens (the Off-Central, St. Petersburg).

Sunday’s two performances of Wicked (the national touring company) mark the end of the extended Straz Center/Morsini Hall run of the popular Wizard of Oz spinoff musical. Tickets.

And the “whodunit” comedy Shear Madness continues at the Straz Center’s Jaeb Theatre (Tampa). Tickets.

Dance and jazz

Project Alchemy founder and choreographer Alex Jones will be at thestudio@620 Friday for DanceBreak Live: The Creation and Creatives Behind Jazz Theory. He’ll be joined by saxophonist Jeremy Carter, and dancers, for a discussion and presentation on “the experience of combining the modes of jazz improvisation with dance composition.” Find tickets here.

Crooner alert! Michael Bolton sings at the Seminole Hard Rock Event Center tonight (tickets), while the ageless Johnny Mathis returns to Ruth Eckerd Hall Saturday (tickets).

Steve Miller is at Ruth Eckerd Hall tonight (tickets); a ‘60s oldies show with the Cyrkle, the Vogues, Gary Lewis & the Playboys and Jay & the Americans visits the Mahaffey Theater Friday (tickets).

Rock keyboard icon Rick Wakeman is at the Capitol Theatre Saturday, part of a solo “songs and stories” tour. Here’s our interview with Rick from earlier in the week.

And St. Petersburg Opera Company takes over the Palladium Theater with a production of Beethoven’s Fidelio Friday, Sunday, and Tuesday the 28^th. Read about it here.
