Uptown Eats
Bring your laptop tp Uptown Eats, St. Petersburg’s newest coffee/breakfast cafe, with an in-house bakery (scones! beignets!). “We encourage people to camp out,” owner Dan Schmidt says. “It’s a little different with the Covid, because your space is kind of limited, but everyone’s so nice – they know if they’re taking up too much real estate.” A cozy, 800-square foot corner on Dr. Martin Luther King St. (aka 9th Street) North, Uptown opened in the space previously occupied by the original Banyan Cafe. The eclectic (and scrumptious) menu includes Dan’s legendary Monday Meals: “I present it Friday or Saturday and you pre-order it. And we take orders till 1 p.m. on Monday; sometimes it sells out by Sunday. It’s a prescribed meal, either with meat or without meat, and I always have a salad, a soup available and a dessert. Pickups are Mondays from 5 to 7, fully cooked and ready to go. It’s comfort food – sometimes it’s healthful, but most of the time it’s a lot of cheese, and a lot of gooey, home lovin’ kind of thing.”
