YMCA’s Speer Preschool Academy to expand

The YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg commenced construction this week on an expansion of its Speer YMCA Preschool Academy, 2100 26th Avenue S. Four new classrooms have been added, to accommodate 32 more children, ranging from 6 weeks to 2 years old.
“Knowing the critical need for infant and toddler care in south St. Petersburg, we have chosen to put over $1.5 million into this expansion,” said David Jezek, President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg, in a prepared statement. He referenced a Harvard University study indicating that every dollar invested in early childhood education yields a $7 return to the community, suggesting this project could contribute over $10 million in community value.
The expansion will also introduce several outdoor and facility enhancements, including a toddler-specific playground, a covered “airnasium” for various activities, improvements to the existing playground, updates to current classrooms, a renovated teaching garden and a refreshed building facade. Construction is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks, with the new classrooms expected to open later this year.
The Speer YMCA Preschool Academy has been serving the community since its establishment in 2016. It offers early childhood education programs designed to prepare children for academic success and lifelong learning. The academy is part of the YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg’s broader commitment to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
