Derby Lane ends live greyhound races

December 28, 2020 - Derby Lane in St. Petersburg hosted its last live greyhound race on Sunday.  Derby Lane, which was the oldest continuously operating greyhound track in the world, ended live races due to the 2018 passage of a Florida constitutional amendment that banned wagering on dog races. Alexis Winning, marketing director, told WFLA News Channel 8 that there are no plans right now for the future of the property, but the poker room and simulcast areas will remain open for off-track horse betting. St. Petersburg Kennel Club, which does business as Derby Lane, said earlier this year that it would lay off 65 employees, beginning in December and continuing through April.
