MLB Commish: ‘Baseball can thrive’ in Tampa Bay

November 1, 2022 - Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred recently expressed his faith in Tampa Bay Rays Owner Stu Sternberg’s ability to build a new stadium in the region. Speaking to Chris “Mad Dog” Russo at the World Series over the weekend, Manfred called Tampa Bay “a viable major league market” and a place where baseball can thrive. He was less optimistic about the Oakland Athletics’ chances to stay in their home city. Manfred also explained that Tampa Bay’s ownership can deduct the cost of a new stadium from their revenue-sharing agreement. While it is not a one-time payment, he called it “a revenue stream that they continue to get over a 10-year period.”
