Pedestrian survives car crash but $15,000 prosthetic leg stolen

June 8, 2021 - A pedestrian with a prosthetic leg was hit by a car late Monday night near the intersection of 49th Street North and 5th Avenue North in St. Petersburg. According to a news release, Christopher Harris, 49, was crossing 5th Avenue North via a crosswalk when he was struck by a westbound 2004 Infinity G35, driven by Joshua Grimmer, 21. The collision dislodged Harris’s prosthetic leg, which struck a vehicle traveling eastbound on 5th Avenue North. The prosthesis, valued at $15,000 and decorated with custom artwork, was stolen before officers arrived on the scene. Harris was transported to Bayfront Hospital with life-threatening injuries and remains in critical condition. His family urges anyone with knowledge of the leg’s whereabouts to contact St. Petersburg Police Department.
