Rays pitch MLB Executive Council on split season
November 19, 2021 - Officials with the Tampa Bay Rays have taken their pitch to split seasons with Montreal on the road this week, presenting their plan to Major League Baseball’s Executive Council at the quarterly owners meeting in Chicago. The meetings concluded Thursday with the eight-owner panel declining to make a decision. Commissioner Rob Manfred said the council did not come to a conclusion due to more pressing matters, such as a new labor agreement and resolving media contract issues. Although the next owners meeting is not scheduled until February, Rays owner Stuart Sternberg said the matter could be revisited through a conference call in a few weeks. The council gave the Rays permission to “explore” other options in 2019, and the team is now waiting on approval to “pursue” the split-city proposal.
