Rays rule Kiermaier, Zunino out for season

July 26, 2022 - The Tampa Bay Rays will play the remainder of the 2022 season without former starters Kevin Kiermaier and Mike Zunino. Kiermaier, a fan-favorite outfielder, will undergo surgery to repair a torn hip labrum. Zunino, a catcher who enjoyed a breakout 2021 season, will have an operation to treat thoracic outlet syndrome. Many speculate that Tampa Bay will trade Kiermaier, by far the longest tenured Ray, or buy out his contract. Zunino may have also played his final game in St. Petersburg, as he qualifies for free agency this offseason. The defending AL East champs, currently in third place in the division, are also without Wander Franco, Nick Anderson, Shane Baz, Tyler Glasnow, Manuel Margot and several other players currently on the injured list.
