Tribute to Courageous 12 planned for EDGE Central

August 12, 2020 - EDGE Central Development Partners has committed to commission artwork honoring The Courageous 12, the 12 Black St. Petersburg police officers who sued the city to gain the full rights of their white counterparts. The tribute monument will be installed at the mixed-use project EDGE Central Development plans for the former St. Petersburg Police headquarters. The St. Petersburg City Council is scheduled to vote Aug. 20 on a plan to sell the property at 1300 1st Ave. N. to EDGE Central Development, which will contribute at least $50,000 and up to $100,000 for the monument. The city's public arts commission also pledged $100,000 for the tribute. Last year, the city unveiled a plaque honoring The Courageous 12 inside the lobby of the new police headquarters, when the last surviving member, Leon Jackson, said the group was "the Jackie Robinson of police integration."
