Floridian Social Club temporarily closed due to Covid
There won’t be a New Year’s Eve celebration at the Floridian Social Club. The event, along with everything else on the venue’s calendar through Jan. 3, has been canceled due to the upsurge in cases of Covid-19.
“We were so looking forward to ringing in the New Year with you all, but with the rise in cases among our staff and guests, we feel this is the most responsible and safe decision,” Floridian management posted on the club’s Facebook page, stating that the decision was made with respect to the health and well-being of our guests, staff, and community.”
The Floridian, which opened in February following a lengthy, Covid-caused delay, has music six nights per week, along with special events. Tonight’s Holiday Comedy Show, spotlighted Tuesday in the Catalyst, was also canceled.
“If you have purchased a ticket for New Year’s Eve, refunds will be issued,” the Facebook notice read. “We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience and hoping we can celebrate together soon.”
The New Year’s Eve show, with Shannon Magrane and the Magrane Train Band, had been sold out for two months, said Floridian owner Kevin Chadwick. “Over the last couple of days, some guests started to cancel,” Chadwick said. “And then people we know got this new strain of Covid. So we started paying attention.
“And by the number of conversations with our customers, our staff and our leadership, we knew the right thing to do was to not put anyone at risk, and close the theater, unfortunately. But I’d rather close it for one or two days so everybody can be healthy the rest of the year.”
At American Stage, Sunday and Tuesday performances of Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol were canceled “for a non-Covid related issue,” the theater reported. The holiday show is expected to resume with the scheduled performances at 2 and 7 p.m. today.
Tampa’s Jobsite Theatre pushed back the opening date of its next production Romeo and Juliet, one week, “in response to ongoing health and safety concerns.” The play will debut with preview performances Jan. 19 and 20.
