The Tampa Bay Rays have opened a new cashierless concession store at Tropicana Field, powered by Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology, bringing another layer of artificial intelligence-driven retail to downtown St. Petersburg.

The autonomous store, launched in partnership with Gallery, allows fans to enter the market, grab drinks or snacks and leave without stopping at a traditional checkout counter. The system uses a combination of AI, computer vision, sensor fusion and RFID tracking to identify purchases automatically.

Fans enter the store by tapping a credit card or mobile payment at the gate. Once inside, they can select items and walk out. Charges are processed automatically after exit.

The new store is now live inside Tropicana Field, as the Rays continue a broader modernization push tied to the team’s return to the stadium following extensive repairs and upgrades.

The technology has become increasingly common inside major sports venues, airports and entertainment arenas where operators are trying to reduce long concession lines during high-traffic periods. Amazon has expanded the Just Walk Out platform across stadiums and event venues nationwide, even as the company scaled back portions of the technology inside some of its own grocery stores earlier this year.

Tropicana Field previously introduced a cashierless concession concept in 2023 using a separate autonomous retail platform. The new Amazon-powered store signals the organization’s continued investment in frictionless retail and faster in-game transactions.

The market appears designed primarily around grab-and-go beverages and packaged snacks, with refrigerated coolers lining the back wall and entry gates positioned at the front of the compact retail space.

The launch comes as Tropicana Field reopens following major hurricane-related repairs. The stadium suffered severe roof damage during Hurricane Milton in October 2024, forcing the Rays to temporarily relocate before returning for the 2026 season after a large-scale rehabilitation project.

The reopening included numerous upgrades throughout the ballpark, including redesigned premium spaces, refreshed suites and new concession concepts.

Autonomous retail has become particularly attractive to stadium operators because of the condensed purchasing windows during games. Teams and concession partners believe faster checkout systems can increase sales volume while improving the fan experience.

Industry analysts have also pointed to labor challenges and staffing costs as drivers behind the adoption of AI-powered concession systems.

Amazon has promoted Just Walk Out as a way to eliminate checkout lines entirely. The system relies on overhead sensors, machine learning models and tracking technology that identify which products customers remove from shelves.

The Rays have not publicly disclosed whether additional autonomous stores are planned for Tropicana Field.

The store launch also reflects the continued growth of AI-powered consumer technology in Tampa Bay, where local businesses, venues and institutions have increasingly embraced automation and artificial intelligence tools in public-facing operations.

The convenience is great except you don’t have any idea if you were properly charged. Since there is no receipt there is no way to tell.
