Artistic Director Maharaj steps down from American Stage

Rajendra Ramoon Maharaj, who became American Stage’s Producing Artistic Director in October, has resigned, citing “personal reasons,” effective immediately.

Maharaj replaced Stephanie Gularte, who stepped down in 2020 because of a health situation.

Maharaj was scheduled to announce the theater’s 2022-23 season Friday, before the opening night performance of Footloose at Demens Landing Park.

He was also scheduled to direct Dutchman, the followup to Footloose.

“I would like to thank my American Stage colleagues, our local theater and community partners, and all those who have supported me during my fruitful time here. I wish American Stage much success,” Maharaj said in a statement supplied by the American Stage board of directors.
