Victor Minke Huls joined The Florida Orchestra in 2023 as associate principal cellist. An accomplished musician who holds – among his other degrees – a doctorate in conducting, Huls is a native of Jacksonville, the only child of veteran string players.
Today on Arts Alive!, Huls discusses his earliest ambitions to make music his livelihood, his career trajectory and more. He served as the principal cellist of the Amarillo Symphony (2019-23), and was a cello fellow at the New World Symphony (2021-23). He has also performed with the Jacksonville Symphony, Aspen Chamber Symphony, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Toledo Symphony, Peninsula Music Festival, Saint Augustine Music Festival, Lincoln Center Stage and Nu Deco Ensemble.
The multi-instrumentalist talks about his role in TFO, the relationship between the conductor and the musicians, and why the cello was the main instrument of choice for him.
Today from 5 to 8 p.m., Huls will perform inside St. Petersburg’s Imagine Museum, with violinist Nina Kim. Saturday and Sunday he’ll be back in his regular chair with TFO at the Mahaffey Theater, for a program that includes Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, Dawson’s Negro Folk Symphony and Enescu’s Romanian Rhapsody No. 1.

Congratulations on a terrific interview. I especially commend Mr. DeYoung for his artistic sensitivity and insight. As someone close to Dr. Huls since his boyhood in Jacksonville, I can attest that he was never an “obnoxious kid”! He is a treasure in your midst, and I applaud you for introducing your audience to him.
