Arts Alive! podcast: St. Pete Opera and ‘Carmen’

Today’s Arts Alive! podcast is a close-up look at Carmen, the opera by Georges Bizet, which is bringing St. Petersburg Opera Company’s 19th season to a close. The production, at the Palladium Theater, opens tonight and will run on various dates through June 15.

New York-based mezzo-soprano Sishel Claverie, who has the title role, talks about bringing the seductive Carmen (one of opera’s most notorious femme fatales) to life. The native of Mexico has assayed her before, in productions across the globe, but this is her first-ever show with St. Pete Opera.
We discuss Claverie’s career, which has included numerous world premieres of contemporary (and sometimes experimental) operas, as well as the great classics.
And yes, she’s having a great time, enjoying summer in the city.
Artistic director and conductor Mark Sforzini joins us for an animated discussion about not only Carmen itself, but the cast of professional singer/actors who are working hard to bring this massive undertaking to vibrant life.
Carmen is presented with live orchestra. Find tickets and more information at this link.
