Arts Alive! podcast: The UNITED Mural Fest
Talking public art with John Gascot and Laura Spencer.
Public art is our topic for discussion on today’s Arts Alive! podcast. Disheartened by the State’s removal of St. Petersburg’s Black History Matters street mural, artist John Gascot decided to commission a new mural of DEI declaration, outdoors on his own building.
Gascot is a co-owner of Studios at 5663, a Pinellas Park artists’ collective. Beginning Saturday, six artists, Gascot included, will paint the word UNITED on the building’s western wall. This space measures approximately 1,200 square feet.
The public is invited to UNITED Mural Fest, a free 11 a.m.-4 p.m. event that will include tours of the artist lairs inside the building at 5663 Park Boulevard, along with opportunities to paint several community canvases.
Members of the public can paint the new mural’s background, as well, while the six artists each work, in their own diverse styles, on their own letter. Gascot has the letter U.
Artist Laura Spencer, aka Miss Crit, has been assigned the letter E. Spencer joins Gascot on today’s podcast, discussing the event, the artists involved, and her membership in the Leadership St. Pete Class of 2026.
