‘Catalyst Sessions’ recap: Andi Matheny
Monday on The Catalyst Sessions, Andi Matheny said it was surprisingly effective to teach acting techniques to her students via a virtual platform.
With a face on a screen, said the St. Petersburg coach, “That’s a lot closer than I can get to students in the studio. So if I see all these thumbnail sketches, and I can really zero in on their faces, it’s actually even more granular than being in the studio.
“And for actors, that’s kind of a cool thing, because we’re usually framed and filmed like this. So our classes are very much about being on camera, being on a TV show, taping yourself for an audition, and probably even moreso than in the studio.”
Andi Matheny Acting Studios will celebrate its 10th year in St. Pete in October. Matheny and her husband, screenwriter Tom Flynn, fell in love with the area after deciding to put Los Angeles – where they’d already enjoyed successful careers – in the rearview mirror.
Monday’s Catalyst Sessions was also a fun and freewheeling look at Matheny’s career both in front of and behind the camera, in her California days and continuing here in Florida.
