Welcome to the Catalyst’s Community Voices platform. We’ve curated community leaders and thinkers from all parts of our great city to speak on issues that affect us all. Visit our Community Voices page for more details.

Over Tiger Bay’s 40 years of existence, our organization, which intends to host open-tent civic and political conversations of every stripe has long been the gathering place for local politics. We have hosted countless debates, forums and roundtables with local politicians and local candidates of both parties.

We continued that tradition with the St. Petersburg City Council District 1 Debate held July 31. City Council Chair and representative from District 1 Charlie Gerdes will term out of Council this year, leaving District 1 an empty seat with no incumbent.

As Tiger Bay has long done, we invited the District 1 candidates to join us for our July luncheon to differentiate themselves from one another in this nonpartisan City Council election. Janelle Irwin of Florida Politics moderated the spirited debate between candidates Robert Blackmon and John Hornbeck. See the full video above.
