Legislative changes increase density in St. Pete neighborhoods

Residential neighborhoods in St. Petersburg could soon see 10-story mixed-use buildings adjacent to single-family homes, following changes to the state’s Live Local Act.

Districts and structures designated as historic after Jan. 1, 2000, are not exempt from the increased density allowances provided by Senate Bill 1730. City council members discussed the updated law, enacted July 1, and its local impacts Thursday morning at a committee meeting.

State bans pavement art, threatens to withhold funding

St. Petersburg must remove and prohibit street murals honoring the city’s diversity and inclusivity, along with any other street and sidewalk art, or potentially lose state funding.

An internal Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) memo dated June 30 highlights the state’s prohibition of pavement or surface art and the need to ensure compliance. Assistant Secretary Will Watts cited safety concerns and the potential interference with automated vehicles.
