Pattern and Pause: Matthew Szidik, Kailey Carleton and Kimberly Fahey

Each year at the Chihuly Collection, we highlight the work of artists who create and/or teach at the Morean Glass Studio. The purpose of this exhibition series is to demonstrate that extraordinary glass art is made not only in the Pacific Northwest (where Dale Chihuly is from) but also right here in our backyard.  This year’s featured Morean Glass Studio artists, like Chihuly, are inspired by the rhythms and intricacies of the natural world to create meditative work that invites the viewer to pause and reflect.

Originally from Illinois, Matthew Szidik is a demo artist, narrator and instructor at the Morean Glass Studio. He teaches summer camp and intermediate courses as well as flameworking workshops. He holds a BFA from Southern Illinois University. Matthew says his work “transports people out of their everyday routine and into a place of meditation by reigniting their imagination.”

Kimberly Fahey joined the Morean Glass studio a year ago from New Jersey and currently serves as the introductory glassblowing instructor and assistant demonstration artist. She holds a BFA in Photography with a minor in Glass from Jacksonville University. Inspired by sacred geometry and mandalas, her work combines glass and painting to explore meditation, movement and material connection.

Hailing from Massachusetts, Kailey Carleton is a beginning glassblowing instructor and demonstration artist in the Morean Glass Studio. She holds a BFA in Glass from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston. About her work, Kailey states, “it explores the relationship between organic growth, memory and transformation…I am drawn to the stillness found in small, often-overlooked moments in nature and seek to evoke that quiet sense of presence within my work.”
