Tonal Drawing uses the idea of drawing starting with mass rather than line. By looking for mass, space, light, and dark, rather than edges first, one can analyze visual information as easily understood shapes. It is a different thought process than starting with edges/lines. Using simple subject matter, we will explore “seeing” whole shapes and breaking them into pattern to translate 3d onto 2d paper. We will experiment with a variety of drawing materials to see how each one helps us filter different visual information and break out of drawing our "perceptions" instead of our "conceptions."

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

How to draw more accurately through an intuitive process as well as by analyzing shapes.

Gain the ability to transcribe 3-D visual information onto a flat surface.

Discover a valuable tool for expressiveness as well as visual accuracy.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

16 years old and up is preferred. It is not for children who are still using art to process their experiences through symbolic drawing. Beginning level artists will be as able to learn as experienced artists looking for new approaches to seeing.
