Founded in Woodstock, New York in 1902, the Byrdcliffe Arts and Crafts Colony was built on the ideals of John Ruskin, and invited artists and craftspeople to live and work in this beautiful natural environment. There they practiced painting, photography, metalwork, weaving, ceramics, and furniture building. Although few examples of furniture were made, MAACM has on display the most extensive collection of Byrdcliffe furniture extant. In this hour-long discussion learn about Ralph Whitehead, Byrdcliffe’s founder, the works of art on display at MAACM, and how the colony transformed the small town into an artistic center, leading to the famous rock and roll concert in 1969 that gave Woodstock its popular cultural identity as a center for bohemian creativity—probably quite different from what Whitehead had in mind.
