If you’re searching for a way to give back to your community, the Catalyst’s Impact Connector is here to help. Each week, we feature five organizations in the Tampa Bay area that need your input, whether that’s time, talent, items, funding or simply awareness. We’re certain you’ll find something here that matches your interests and will positively impact the community.

Help your neighbors get back on their feet

Volunteers are needed to support the Homeless Empowerment Program, a nonprofit with a mission to provide homeless and low-income individuals and families, including veterans, with housing, food, clothing and support services necessary to obtain self-sufficiency and improved quality of life. In 2023, 87% of the families and 82% of the veterans exiting HEP programs did not return to homelessness. Opportunities exist in areas of kitchen service, maintenance, office work and gardening. For more info, contact Edie Minton at 727-442-9041 ext. 107 or EdieM@HEPempowers.org.

Join upcoming Boards for Bros events

Volunteers are needed for two upcoming Boards for Bros events at the Skatepark of Tampa. Boards for Bros are skateboarders and caring individuals giving kids a chance to have their very own first skateboard.

Help is needed Saturday, March 30 at 10:00 a.m. assembling new skateboards to distribute to kids. Saturday, April 6 at 9 a.m., volunteers can help distribute 100 boards to children from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay. Roles include check-in, board distribution and skate lessons. This event is during Tampa Pro, and volunteers without a ticket will receive a wristband to remain at the event all day if they wish. No experience is necessary and all ages are welcome. Email info@boardsforbros.org to RSVP or get more information.

Help out at Healthy Kids Day

YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg is hosting its annual Healthy Kids Day Saturday, April 20 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at three locations: Bardmoore YMCA, Jim & Heather Gills YMCA and the new Speer YMCA. The event is free and open to the public and will include an obstacle course, interactive exercise demos, music, healthy snacks, face painting, giveaways and activities for the whole family. Volunteers are needed to help at all three locations. Interested individuals and groups can register online here.

Sea Turtle Awareness Day & Lake Cleanup

Join Keep Pinellas Beautiful and the Clearwater Marine Aquarium’s Sea Turtle Nesting Team for a lake cleanup. Get the chance to learn about sea turtle conservation and how you can help our local sea turtle population. This Sea Turtle Awareness Day event will include raffle prizes, the opportunity to personalize a sea turtle nesting stake, photo opportunities and much more. Get the details and register here.

It’s never been more important to support Florida’s homeless shelters. I’ve been a volunteer and a board member at HEP for more than 15 years and I can tell you they make a difference. Thank you for shining a light on HEP.
