Free comic books Saturday!
If Record Store Day came with an offer of free records to anyone who walked through the door of their local independent shop, doubtless the round-the-block lines would be twice as long as they presently are for April’s annual celebration of music on vinyl. And those platters don’t come cheap.
(Record Store Day is, from all indications, little more than a quick-buck bonanza for eBay re-sellers.)
Diamond Comic Distributors does what it can every year around this time by sponsoring Free Comic Book Day, during which free special edition comic books – yes, just like it says – are handed out at indie shops across the nation (and in the U.K. too, where comics are also a big deal for collectors).
The 2023 edition is this Saturday (May 6).
Of course, the idea is to raise awareness of this already lucrative business, and to lure people who might normally steer clear of such things into the comic book arena.
They’re not handing out the rare stuff – no free Superman No. 1 for you, pal – but titles “especially” created by popular publishers Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, Titan, Kodansha, Archie, Graphix/ Scholastic, Graphix, Action Lab and others.

Although there may be others (a quick phone call is advised), known participating bay area stores include:
