Brooksville's Susan Lumsden, created Anclote Answers: Estuarial Quandaries to answer her ultimate artist’s question, “What if?” She incorporates hand-dyed fabric in abstract patterns with hand-cut linoleum printing. (detail)

Connecticut-based Studio Art Quilt Associates, Inc. (SAQA) is a national, nonprofit art association dedicated to the elevation and promotion of the art quilt – that is, stitched designs that work as visual art, not just the this ‘n’ that of Grandma’s patchwork quilts (not that there’s anything wrong with that!)

Over 30 years, SAQA has come to include more than 4,000 artists, curators, collectors, and art professionals around the world.

In St. Pete, Florida CraftArt, 501 Central Ave., is opening an exhibition of works from the organization’s Florida Region. Debuting Saturday, The Artist’s Question … Answered in Fiber consists of 29 art quilts. The artists were challenged to pose a question or grapple with an issue, then answer the question through the creation of an original work.

The Artist’s Question will be at the Florida CraftArt gallery through May 14, after which it will travel to five additional venues in Florida, Alabama, Louisiana and Texas, through summer 2023.

Sarasota artist Peg Green said her quilt, Feeling Exuberant – Somersault, was created to express joy, delight, vivacity, lightness of being, exuberance. “These are feelings in my heart that animate and guide me,” she said.

Painting in the Park

The Museum of Fine Arts St. Petersburg takes it outside Saturday. Painting in the Park (10 a.m.-2 p.m.) is an event for children and families, consisting of 10 art stations where kids can create “make-and-take masterpieces inspired by the MFA Collection,” on a “passport” tour of the outdoor environs. The NOMAD (Neighborhood Oriented Mobile Art and Design) Art Bus will be there, too, and everything is free. Details here.
