The Hustle

Name: Sarah Murray (Impulse Pole Dance)

Posted By Megan Holmes

Sarah Murray grew up in dance classes, went to a performing arts high school and danced in college, and although she felt very passionate about dance as an art form and fitness regimen, she also believed that the options for everyday women, not in a professional program, were few and far between. In 2007, she began taking pole dance lessons. Impulse Studios Pole Dance and Exotic Fitness opened its St. Pete location in 2010, and a studio in Brandon two years later. From the Impulse website: We have clients from 18-60+ years of age; Heels are always optional; Come as you are, no required sexy clothing; Progress at your own pace; No pressure to compete or perform, ever; Loving yourself is not selfish, it's self care.

Hustle (job)

I am the owner of Impulse Studios Pole Dance and Exotic Fitness. We teach individuals to find self love, strength and confidence through the art and sport of pole dancing. We have two locations and 18 employees.

What do you do?

On the average day, many things from website upkeep to lead follow-ups. I am the back end operator, instructor supporter, floor cleaner, Mom of 2, head of household, etc. etc. I am overall, grateful.

Why do you do it?

People need more ways to love themselves. We fill this need in a unique, niche way that serves a special part of our community.

What was your Catalyst? (How did you get started?)

I was working entry level roles in government fresh out of my Master’s degree at USF and they put me in a room with no windows to review the “dredging project.” I considered poking myself with a pencil to go home so I could work on my class outline for the side gig I picked up, teaching pole dance. I thought, “hmmm, this may be a sign I should consider changing positions.”

What’s a common misconception or unknown aspect of what you do?

Of course, that we are strippers. We love and support strippers, their job is not easy but we are made up of a hodge podge of athletes, dancers and just regular people who like to have fun with their hobbies/workout.

What’s the most challenging part of your Hustle?

Time. I wish I had endless amounts of time and energy for both home and hustle. As well as delegating and finding the right individuals to support and grow with without sacrificing their goals as well.

What’s the most valuable piece of business advice/insight that’s helped you?

You’ll never please everyone.
