Former Bayboro Power Plant changes hands

The sale of Bayboro Station, formerly the Bayboro Power Plant and now a three-story waterfront office building at 263 13th Avenue S., St. Petersburg, closed Dec. 30 for a purchase price of $28.22 million.

The Bayboro Power Plant was built by the Pinellas County Power Company in 1924 at Bayboro Harbor, once an estuary where Booker Creek and Salt Creek met Tampa Bay. The area later became St. Petersburg’s port and manufacturing district. The plant provided service far beyond Pinellas County, and in 1927 the company changed its name to Florida Power Corporation.

The plant closed in 1974. Following extensive repairs and upgrades completed in 1998, including the removal of asbestos and outdated wiring and the installation of new windows, the building was rebranded Bayboro Station to serve as a commercial office building.

The 80,991 heated square-foot structure sits on a 1.82-acre parcel with views of Tampa Bay. It features tinted glass windows, exterior single and double glass doors, 24-hour security and video surveillance and 150 on-site parking spaces. Current tenants include the Tampa Bay Estuary Program and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries’ Southeast Regional Office.

The seller, Bayboro Partners Ltd., based in Winter Park, acquired the property in 2000 for $9.8 million. The buyer, Clearwater’s Prometheus Corporate Real Estate, LLC, made the purchase under the registered name Bayboro Station Properties, LLC.
