Selmon Extension over Gandy Boulevard closes for repairs
The Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority’s Selmon Extension, a raised highway over Gandy Boulevard, is temporarily closed for repairs.
During a routine inspection for the 1.9-mile extension, engineers found two horizontal strands had come loose from their anchor. THEA announced Sunday evening the extension is now closed, as engineers are investigating and repairing the steel strands.
The loose steel strands do not pose a structural issue, but THEA is closing the extension for safety precautions.
“These wires can be maintained and replaced inside the structure with live traffic overhead,” THEA said in a news release. “However, in an abundance of caution, and because of the unique nature of this structure, the decision has been made to close the Extension until more information is obtained and evaluated.”
The $230 million extension, which was fully funded through toll revenue and bonds, was completed in 2021 and provided an express connection from the south end of the Gandy Bridge to Brandon.
Although the extension is closed until further notice, traffic will continue on the Selmon Expressway and Gandy Boulevard. THEA will continue to update the public about the maintenance project for the extension.
THEA has placed barrels and message boards to alert drivers about the closure.
