SHINE Festival to add 15 murals for 10th anniversary
The 15 murals to be created for the SHINE Mural Festival’s 10th anniversary have been announced. St. Petersburg’s signature public art event runs Oct. 11 through 20, and includes a 10-year Retrospective Group Exhibition, and a finale event with live artmaking, custom installations, live music and more.
Artists from the community, from around the country and around the world are assigned downtown walls on which to paint their large-scale designs.
Reflecting on a decade of SHINE, director Jenee Priebe said “This feels like the first major milestone for the festival. I think because the city has changed so much over the last 10 years; it feels like such an accomplishment to still be doing what we’re doing, despite how much the city has changed, and how much the art community has changed. How much property has changed!”
None of the four international artists, or the two national muralists, have previously participated in SHINE.
International artists are Fintan Magee (Australia), NeSpoon (Poland), Abys (France) and Emmanuel Jarus (Canada).
Seattle’s Stevie Shao and Atlanta’s George F. Baker III are the national artists.
From the bay area: Up & Over, Cristi López, Frankie G, Kris Markovich and Johnny Vitale, and Quinn Cale.
The 2024 “Bright Spot” community mural artists: Ya La’Ford Presents the Brightest Star, Community SHINES; Zulu Painter in Partnership with AMI Kids; Naomi Haverland in Partnership with Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center on The Pier; Dwayne Sheppard & Brian McAllister in Partnership with Florida Art Education Association (FAEA).
Oct. 11: SHINE 10 Year Retrospective Group Exhibition at the Morean Arts Center, with works from over 100 SHINE artists from the past decade, including many from this year’s lineup.
Oct. 19: SHINE 10 Finale Event at FloridaRAMA; solo show and book release by 2023 artist Chris Dyer, custom installations from 2021 artists Ricky Watts and Nicole Salgar, DJ and special performance by Woes Martin (2021) and The Mighty Giants, Giano Currie’s interactive photography experience, After Hours Photoshoot and more.
