The St. Petersburg renaissance has been in full swing for more than a decade. We’ve excelled in many areas and struggled in others. In our series St. Pete 2.0, we’re partnering with the St. Petersburg Downtown Partnership to explore what lies on the other side of our potential – what will it take to move to the “next level” as a city? Through this series, we’ll dig into specific topics with the hope that you, our thoughtful citizens, will share your insight, experience and wisdom.

A strong education system is directly linked to community prosperity. In fact, for the past two years, the Downtown Partnership has identified support for higher education as one of our key priorities. Well-trained workers are critical for economic growth. Students add vitality to city streets, support a nighttime economy and become the entrepreneurs and employees who fuel economic expansion. And the University of South Florida’s St. Petersburg campus community members are all consumers who support downtown businesses and contribute to our economy.

In November, the university identified five targeted academic clusters that will help to build a campus identity, grow the student body and support economic growth.

The clusters are:

  • Environmental and Oceanographic Sciences, Technology and Sustainability
  • STEM Education
  • Visual and Performing Arts
  • Business
  • Health Sciences

As USF’s St. Petersburg campus continues to evolve, we want to engage Catalyst readers and members of the Downtown Partnership and ask your opinion on how the university and business community can strengthen partnerships that bring value to all stakeholders. We want to know what you think about this proposal, but also gain a greater understanding of the community’s feelings about the future of USF’s St. Petersburg campus.
