Ohio-based COhatch is flipping several buildings in the greater Tampa Bay area into shared workspaces – including one in St. Petersburg.

COhatch, which purchased the former Harlan Hotel building at 15 8th St. N. in 2021 for $2.25 million, is readapting the four-story structure into private offices, co-working spaces and meeting rooms with 24-7 access.

“We like to revitalize buildings that are part of a neighborhood,” Alisa Rehn and Erin Maxson, of COhatch’s marketing and operations team, shared with the Catalyst, speaking on behalf of the selection team as they are not directly involved in that process.

The 12,000-square-foot historically designated building was constructed in 1925. COhatch expected to open its doors before the new year; however, COhatch faced delays due to permitting, and the space is now scheduled to open in the next three to four months.

The company recently opened its first local hub at 211 E. Main Street in Lakeland.

COhatch is currently restoring two former nightclub buildings – one at 2132 W. Main St. in Tampa, which was built in 1905, and a building at 121 East Tarpon Ave. in Tarpon Springs. Updated opening dates for the Tampa and Tarpon Springs locations have not been announced.

COhatch aims to have 500 locations in 50 communities across the U.S. by 2032, opening up to 15 in the Tampa area. Although COhatch isn’t specifically targeting startups, it does offer scholarships to early-venture companies.

COhatch’s buildings typically can accommodate over 50 people, depending on the square footage, and offers different amenities such as movie theater areas and rock-climbing walls. COhatch locations may also include a food/beverage operator.

While many co-working companies determine potential office locations based on specific insights such as occupancy rates, vehicular traffic and the area’s median income, COhatch team members said there are personal connections with the locations COhatch has a presence in.

“Many of our team members have personal ties or have visited the locations where COhatch locations are being put in. We love the areas and think they are great cities to work, meet, and live in,” the duo said.

COhatch’s internal design team, Brightstone Creative, are spearheading the design for all of the Florida locations, which will feature art paying homage to the area’s well-known landmarks and scenery.
