Straub Park movie series opens with ‘Summer of Soul’
The Oscar, BAFTA and Grammy-winning documentary Summer of Soul kicks off the 2022 Movies in the Park series in North Straub Park Thursday. Admission is free.
Directed by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, the film was crafted after the discovery of long-lost footage from the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, which took place over several weekends over the same summer as the much better-known Woodstock Music & Arts Festival.
Summer of Soul features astonishing live performances by many of the top rhythm ‘n’ blues artists of the era, including Stevie Wonder, Sly & the Family Stone, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Nina Simone and the Chambers Brothers, along with the pop singing group the 5th Dimension and gospel greats Mahalia Jackson and the Staple Singers.
Thursday’s event begins at 6:30 p.m. with live music from Kyah Robinson.
